Brian Van de Water explains how action generates data, and data is the raw material of good decisions.
July 30, 2026

By Brian Van de Water, Founder and CEO, SPL Consulting, LLC
Action. Or no action. One thing is for certain – if you don’t take action, there will be no improvement. You will not affect positive progress to your strategic initiatives or other change efforts. There is a peculiar kind of paralysis that can sometimes grip even the most capable leaders. It isn’t laziness, it’s waiting for the time to be “right.”
I share this key principle for success with clients: “Don’t let perfect get in the way of better.” Every client SPL Consulting, LLC works with hears this often. We call it procrastination. But at its core, it is often fear of imperfection masquerading as patience. And that ends up costing us more than the mistakes we are trying to avoid.
Procrastination thrives on a lie: that somewhere ahead of us is a moment when we’ll have more information, more confidence, more clarity and that this moment is worth waiting for. So, we wait. We let other day to day tasks consume our valuable time while nothing changes. We research a little more. Meanwhile the clock keeps ticking and the problem we’re avoiding doesn’t go away, it grows teeth.
The truth can be uncomfortable but liberating. Spoiler alert: the perfect moment almost never comes, and when it doesn’t, we haven’t avoided risk, we have traded the risk of failure for stagnation. Stagnation feels safer because it’s quiet. It doesn’t produce visible mistakes. But it also doesn’t change anything at all. I take that back. It does result in something. Think about your culture and morale. If your team lives in this moment, they often take on the procrastination gene themselves and at the same time share negative thoughts “that nothing ever changes.”
Here’s the principle worth internalizing and weaving into the fabric of your company’s culture. “Any action is better than no action, even if it is wrong, as long as you learn from it.” This isn’t a license for recklessness. It’s a recognition that action generates data, and data is the raw material of good decisions.
When you take a step, even a flawed one, you learn something you couldn’t have learned from the sidelines. You find out the customer doesn’t actually want the feature you assumed they wanted. You discover the process is broken and even the best employees will “fail” by using it. Plus, you realize the fear that kept you from taking action was smaller than you imagined, or the real obstacle was something you hadn’t even considered.
None of these “a-ha” moments are available to the leader who’s still waiting for the perfect time. In a company I led, we celebrated “failures” and learning during our monthly company meetings. We eliminated the fear that kept the team from making progress that was just asking to be made.
Contrast this with inaction. Inaction produces no change. Nothing better or worse, just same thing, different day. And while you’re standing still, the world and competitors are not. Problems get worse. Deadlines close in. The cost of waiting is rarely zero, it’s invisible until it isn’t.
The true value of an action is that it supports a learning culture. This caveat matters immensely. Action without reflection may or may not lead to progress. The value of doing something comes from what you extract after the action takes place. Did it work? Why or why not? What would you do differently next time? This is where procrastinations cousin, impulsiveness, also falls short and becomes activity without alignment to overall objectives and results.
Part of what fuels procrastination is the fear of mistakes. They can be perceived as judgments on our competence rather than new data to use in decision making. Trying something that doesn’t work shouldn’t be framed as a mistake. It should be framed as valuable feedback to help plan our next move. This reframing changes the emotional weight of taking action.
Instead of worrying about the inner thought of ”I might fail and that will define me,” it shifts to, “I will learn something and adjust if needed,” and becomes empowering. The lesson here is procrastination isn’t only about time management. It’s about the distorted relationship between imperfection and risk. The fix isn’t to eliminate uncertainty before acting but to accept that uncertainty is the price of progress. Sometimes you have to pay for an education. Remember, “Take action, even if it is wrong, as long as you learn from it.”
